What is
DLPA?
DLPA (DL-Phenylalanine)
contains two forms of the amino acid phenylalanine. The "D"
form is synthetically made to block a nervous system enzyme
that amplifies pain signals. The "L" form is a natural
substance found in protein-rich foods that bolsters the
mood-elevating chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and
nor epinephrine.
What Does
in the Body?
DLPA works to help improve mood
and relieve pain. L-phenylalanine is associated with
elevated levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and
norepinephrine in the brain, which may alleviate symptoms of
depression, and D-phenylalanine works to block pain signals.
Studies have shown that DLPA
effectively blocks arthritis pain and joint inflammation in
many patients.
Where is it found?
Protein foods such as poultry, meats, soybeans, fish, dairy
products, nuts, and seeds are rich in L-phenylalanine.
D-phenylalanine is much less common in foods, and DLPA does
not occur naturally. Symptoms of Deficiency/Side Effects
Dietary deficiency is rare
but symptoms may include lethargy, edema, weakness, skin
lesions as well as liver damage and slow growth. A
deficiency in diet would only occur with very an extremely
low protein intake. |
