What Are They?

The essential amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine are called branched chain amino acids. The main functions of all three are to stimulate protein synthesis and decrease protein breakdown. Leucine metabolizes fats, valine metabolizes carbohydrates and Isoleucine metabolizes both fats and carbohydrates.

Functions of Branched Chain Amino Acid?

BCAAs serve as important fuel sources for skeletal muscle during periods of metabolic stress. Branched-Chain Amino Acids have an effect on all protein metabolism and during periods of stress are required by the body in larger amounts than any other amino acid.

BCAAs have been used in medicine as part of the treatment for some forms of liver disease and following surgery and chronic illness to improve healing and recovery.

Where Are They Found?

Good sources BCAAs are found in chicken, eggs, fish, lentils, liver,  red meat, rye seeds, and soy protein.
